There is no escaping the Gloom and Doom that the media portrays, and as much as I try to promote a healthy market in my area (as Knoxville, TN is still in good shape) and get out the word that real estate has, and will always be a local market, I find consumers can not get "the hard economic times" out of their head.
About a month ago I was sitting around trying to think of creative ways to try to get through to my clients that the Knoxville, TN real estate market is still going strong and with interest rates being the lowest in 37 years, my phone rang. I reached for my ear to answer with my trusty Bluetooth, a wonderful piece of technology that has allowed me to perfect the art of multi-tasking, but on my ear it was not. "Where is my Bluetooth," I thought to myself? It was no where to be found so I was forced to answer the phone, "the old fashioned way".
Once my phone conversation was over, my search for the Bluetooth continues and as I retraced my steps I found myself standing outside my laundry room door. Terror ran through me...my Bluetooth was in my pants and my pants were in the dryer for not only the first run, but the 2nd! During a showing earlier in the day, I was greeted by the family dog at one of the houses who was kind enough to leave behind some muddy paw prints on my tan dress pants. Long story short, my pants (and my poor unfortunate Bluetooth) went through not only one wash and dry cycle, but two when they the prints were still there after the initial wash.
I sadly retrieved my Bluetooth from the dryer and headed to the trashcan, but hesitated....what if?....What if it still works? I decided to give it a shot, pluged it in and.... nothing. However, determined to give it a fair try, I decided to leave it plugged and give the little guy one last shot. After 3 weeks, I awake one morning and notice a green glow coming from the nightstand....it was my Bluetooth...the little Bluetooth that could. Incredibly excited, I try to sync it to my phone, but.....nothing...while it could hold a charge, it could not sync.
This made me think, many people give reference to "waiting out" this bad market, but waiting is not enough, and the story of my washed up Bluetooth proves just this. As I thought things over I realized that the Bluetooth I had was nice, but it had a lot of faults, and new technology has led to much better products that would better benefit my business.
So the take home message is- While things may seem to be hard right now, it is not a time to be passive and simply wait for the real estate bubble to come back, instead it is a time to be proactive, reevaluate your business plans, take control of the situation, and create a bubble of your own.
