Yesterday, I took my two Daughters up to Abrams Creeks Campground- a secluded, off the beaten path rugged campground that is part of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. This campground is located several miles off the base of US Highway 129- more popularly referred as "The Dragon"- one of the hot spots for motorcyclists due to the seemingly endless high speed twists and turns.
We had an enjoyable, but very hot and difficult almost 7 mile hike up and down the Hannah Mountain Trail. On our run down the trail (walking was impossible due to the steepness) we encountered a dung beetle rolling a ball of deer poop across the trail.
We admired this strange creature for about half an hour as we watched it attempt to push the dung ball up a steep embankment only to have the dung ball roll back on it and be forced to start all over. The determination of this insect was amazing. It made me think about all the time I complained about bad or inconvenient things that happened in my life and how thankful I was NOT to be a dung beetle.
So when you think your life is bad or that things are not going your way, think about the persistent dung beetle. Day in and day out they spend most of their waking hours seeking out dung, rolling it into balls, and pushing it back to their homes for the adults to use a main water source and as a place to lay and incubate their young. While this may seem like a crappy job (pun very much intended!), these little beetles are incredibly important part of our eco-system. Their role as nature's clean up crew help return nutrients to the soil as they often burry the dung.
